What Is IVF and How Does It Work?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) literally means ‘fertilization in glass’. Eggs retrieved from the woman’s ovaries are combined with sperm in a specialised laboratory. The resulting embryos are cultured for three to five days, and the healthiest one (or two) are transferred into the uterus to establish a pregnancy.
IVF is just one of several assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Depending on the cause and severity of infertility, your doctor may recommend IVF alone, IVF with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection — where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg), IVF with egg donation, IVF with frozen embryo transfer, or intrauterine insemination (IUI) as a simpler first step.

The IVF Journey at Vinayaka Hospital: Step by Step
Step 1 — Fertility Assessment: Both partners undergo a thorough evaluation. This includes blood tests for hormonal levels (FSH, LH, AMH, oestradiol), ultrasound assessment of the ovaries and uterus, semen analysis, and sometimes additional investigations such as hysteroscopy or laparoscopy.
Step 2 — Ovarian Stimulation: The woman receives hormone injections over 10 to 12 days to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Progress is monitored with regular ultrasound scans and blood tests.
Step 3 — Egg Retrieval (Oocyte Pick-Up): When the follicles reach the right size, a trigger injection is given and eggs are retrieved 36 hours later via a minor procedure under sedation. Most women return home the same day.
Step 4 — Fertilisation and Embryo Culture: Eggs are fertilised with sperm in the embryology lab. In ICSI cycles, individual sperm are selected and injected into each egg. Embryos are monitored daily over the next 3 to 5 days.
Step 5 — Embryo Transfer: The best-quality embryo is selected and gently placed into the uterus using a thin catheter. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and is usually painless.
Step 6 — The Two-Week Wait: A pregnancy blood test is performed 14 days after transfer. This is often the most emotionally challenging part of the process, and our team is available for support throughout.
